What is Peter Hess Sound Massage?

The use of sound and vibration for healing has been practiced for thousands of years. It was in Nepal that Peter Hess learned of singing bowls. An engineer by training, he studied the influence of sound and vibration on the human body, especially its ability to bring about relaxation and healing. It was this exposure to the healing influence of sound that led to research, and ultimately, development, of the Peter Hess method of Sound Massage.  Over many years, he has adapted this form of healing to meet the needs of people in the West.

Sound Massage comes to us from Germany, where it is a trusted healing modality.  It is fairly new in the United States.

Therapeutic metal bowls are hand hammered in the traditional way.  Each bowl corresponds to a different area in the body.  There is a bowl for the thyroid area, one for the heart and lungs, a bowl for all of the organs in the abdomen, and a bowl for the joints, such as the hands and feet.

Sound massage takes place in a serene massage room; four therapeutic bowls are used at varying times.  The bowls are placed directly on the clothed body and gently tapped with a soft mallet, per protocol.  The resulting vibration travels through the body in concentric waves, providing massage to all of the cells. This produces deep relaxation, freeing the body from blockages, stress, and tension.

There are abundant studies revealing the impact of negative stress on the human system.  Sound massage is a holistic model that allows one to overcome detrimental effects of stress.  Some of the benefits include:
  • profound relaxation
  • reduction in stress levels
  • quieting of the nervous system
  • reduction of pain
  • decrease in tension and blockages
  • strengthening of the immune system
  • enhanced sleep
  • enhanced well-being
  • enhanced self-awareness and creativity

Sound massage is safe for most people, but should be avoided if one wears a pacemaker, has epilepsy, or is in the first trimester of pregnancy.
